The PorscheTamer is down! I've contracted some sort of intense cold; headaches, soreness and full-body chills, GOTTA LOVE IT! I've also got chem assignments due at 11:59pm tonight that I'm probably not gonna get done.. :(

Kinja'd!!!

I'd be very greatful if someone could try to teach me something new about the 968? And maybe through in your favorite pic of a 993 with it? anything factual, technical or funny will do..

The 968 can drive over 1000 miles on the space saver. How do I know? Because my idiot friend did just that when the 500$ wheel on his 3000$ 968 broke while driving it this winter. The space saver actually just popped so now he is really SOL

They're not crazy expensive. I test drove one for sale last year that had around 60K miles on it and was only $8K.

It was fun little car. I just got scared of early water-cooled Porsche maintenance costs. And the headlights look so weird when popped up.

Its not your average 968. The handbrake fell off in his hand, it had a squirrel living in the gearbox, it idles at 2k, you have to shift from 1st to 3rd. But it is a 968.

Apparently, the 968 is more valuable than you might think, considering it is a stablemate of the 944 and 928. This one sold at auction in 2012 for $346,000.

I actually don't know a anything about Porsches, they all seem to be in the 900's except 901-909, Peugeot Trademarked those numbers. Maybe that's true? I heard or read it once.

Kinja'd!!! K-Roll-PorscheTamer > XJDano
04/21/2014 at 20:36

Kinja'd!!!0

That is true! back when Porsche debuted the original 911, it was designated the '901', Peugeot bitched that they had the trademark for cars that were called '90x', so Porsche just added the '1' to 901 and the 911 was born! Funny story I reckon.

I like the 944 headlights soooooo much better when popped up. When down I don't mind the 928/968 headlights.

I know dat huge 4 banger is pretty awesome! Imagine how huge those pistons are.

I have done some brief maintenance on the early wassers and most people say that the air cooled are easier and cheaper to maintain. I dunno how true that is. I don't know anyone who has ever owned a 928/944/968. But I know and have met a lot of people with air cooled Porsches and they swear by them.

Kinja'd!!!1

oh wow. that color rules.

those wheels are too big though.

but don't think that all the moneys will go towards maintenance in all porsches! certain years of the 911 will save you money over an econobox.

reason?

because the cars are:

1. bulletproof and don't need anything other than regular maintenance

2. the engine lasts a really long time before needing a rebuild

3. once the engine does finally need a rebuild you'll gladly pay for it and do any other work that's needed to get more usage out of the chassis. because a 911 will always be fun to drive no matter how old it is.

with an econobox you'll get sick of it and buy a new one way before the engine needs a rebuild. add up all those econoboxes and you'll spend up more over the years than a 993 C2 or 997.2 C2!

Trivia: My first job was as a lot bot at a VW/Audi dealer in the '90s.

The very first "fancy" car that I ever washed was a 968 Cabrio, in BRG over tan, circa '94. I remember how different it felt under the wash mitt compared to the Mk. II & Mk. III VWs I was used to. The curves, the seams, the quality of the paint, all gave me the impression that there was more to a car than meets the eye, and that premium cars command a premium price for reasons other than the customer's desire to own a certain brand.

Arena Red Turbo FTW:

Weird 968 fact. The balljoints are part of the lower control arm. Not separate service items. These wear out just like on your car, but instead of $68 from NAPA, it's $1100 for the pair. As we say about German design, different does not always mean better.

How about a DFI engine equipped Cayman?

You can get a nice 2009-2011 Cayman 6MT for a decent price. I know it's not super fast in a straight line. But it's reliable and it's a Porsche! And it gets awesome gas mileage for a sports car.

Different cars have different new car smells. Eurovans smelled like vinegary mayo.

"Parts Destruction" is a required activity. Warranty returns must be made inoperable before they're disposed. I had to smash electronics & other components, and slash upholstery. Getting paid to break shit is a ball when you're a teenager.

Driving a GTI VR6 inside a mall is fun, though it's hard to the urge to peel out between Foot Locker & Radio Shack.

Harlequin Edition Golfs weren't nearly as desirable then as they are now.

It's a great place to get knick-knacks. I used to have a sweet GTI Speed Racer poster, and I still have a VW flag that flew on the dealership's roof:

Once, when doing a PDI on a Golf straight from the Puebla factory, I found a Spanish-language Chiclets box in a door pocket.

Direct Fuel Injection. The 911 and Cayman both got it starting in 2009.

Haha you're a 911 snob. I hear ya. I tried not to be and test drove a used DFI Cayman S first. Then I immediately test drove a DFI C2. And it was all over. I got the 2010 997.2 C2 6MT.

I do sometimes wonder what life would have been like with the Cayman S. It would have saved me money. And I could have got an after market exhaust and still came out ahead.

Looking back I think the main reason the C2 seemed more exciting was the sound. I think even though the Cayman's engine is closer to the driver's head the 911 is louder because Porsche made their engineers quiet the Cayman to make it more boring.

With the current models you can get the Sport Exhaust right from the factory.

As far as I know yes. I haven't researched it in a while though. But my car is a '10 and definitely DFI. I'm not sure if it combines DFI and port injection like the new Lambo does to avoid carbon build up. But nobody is complaining about carbon build up on the DFI Porsches like you hear with the DFI Audis. I have 50K miles and the car is running just as strong as it was when I got it with 12K miles.

Oh man if your Dad had bought that car he could have sold it now for a ton of money and bought you both a bunch of other cars...
